Both the song and the video of Kristian North’s “The Pessimist” are entertaining and fun. The video because it presents a tongue-in-cheek comparison of Montreal and Las Vegas in winter. The song because it’s shambolic mixture of ’60s lounge pop, glitter rock and psychedelia.
“Making this record, ‘New Sympathy’, I was interested in this sort of dated futuristic sound, nostalgia for nostalgia,” North tells Chart Attack. “Aesthetically, Maude Deslaurier’s video reflects this, contrasting analogue and digital, Vegas and Montreal in the winter time. This contrast is something I was trying to achieve with the music.”
