Jordana Lilly – “Push & Pull”

$

“Push & Pull” is a successful new track from Jordana Lilly, a Los Angeles-based singer/songwriter who infuses old-school R&B with a modern pop shine. Lyrics like “I’ve got him screaming my name, and he learned it yesterday,” combine with suave orchestral flourishes and a hypnotic rhythmic backing for an emotive, seductive success. The lyrical sentiments – encompassing “one night stands, compartmentalizing, and animal instincts,” – combine with a memorable melodic construction to remain wholly accessible, while still separating from the hordes of modern R&B, touting a distinctive sound and convincing nocturnal atmosphere.

“Push & Pull” and other memorable tracks from this month can also be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of December 2018’ Spotify playlist.

The track is also featured in the genre-based, best-of Spotify compilation Catchy Indie Pop.

Wonderluck – “Orchid Rain”

Wonderluck are a duo churning out catchy songs with an emphasis on electro-pop, dipping into a funk-tinged ’70s allure with bouncy bass lines and quick guitar swipes, as is evident on the infectious new track “Orchid Rain.” The project started in Castro Valley, California, in 2016, the members having Dutch and American roots. Wonderluck describe the track as such: “[it] is about a childhood dream… flowers falling from the sky… hyper-sweetness rain… limitless. A place of joy where we go to to feel safe. As we move on to our next adventure of life the creator of this dream is asking us if we will remember Her.” The melody shines throughout with a captivating replay-ability, the funky bass line standing out particularly among the polished production.

“Orchid Rain” and other memorable tracks from this month can also be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of December 2018’ Spotify playlist.

The track is also featured in the genre-based, best-of Spotify compilation Catchy Electro and Synth-Pop.

The Flings – “Looking on Down the Line”

The timeless-sounding “Looking on Down the Line” is a new track from The Flings, recalling acts like The Band and their ability to infuse mellow aesthetics, twangy guitars, and warm vocals into a memorable sound. The serene croon, guitar twangs, and key/organ additions play beautifully on this track, which the band describes as “a manifestation of past relationships and the maddening mania of welcoming new love.” This is a track that’s exceedingly easy to get lost in. I’m quite enjoying the project’s aesthetic, and look forward to their forthcoming releases.

“Looking on Down the Line” and other memorable tracks from this month can also be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of December 2018’ Spotify playlist.

The track is also featured in the genre-based, best-of Spotify compilation Indie Folk-Rock.

Party for One” by Carly Rae Jepsen

DV:

I’m even less clear now than a year ago on where Carly Rae Jepsen’s career is headed; while “Cut to the Feeling” was mismanaged to commercial irrelevance despite unexpected popular support, “Party for One” came packaged with a decent social media rollout and a video designed to be repurposed into gifs and memes, but an apparent failure to promote it anywhere besides those social channels. Which meant it didn’t even chart in the US, which meant her management has attempted two separate “debuts” of a second video: “Party for One” is getting the worst parts of the rollouts for “Feeling” and “I Really Like You”, from management that seems to think it’s still possible for Carly to replicate the success of “Call Me Maybe”.

She won’t do that, probably ever. And I don’t expect her promo to start making sense anytime soon. But that makes it all the more impressive how Carly’s songs continue to have the consistency of a pop star who knows exactly what they’re doing. “Party for One” is sonically immaculate and lyrically fraught, a complex exploration of emotion packed into the strict, simple structures of a pop song. “Tried to let it go and say I’m over you/ I’m not over you, but I’m tryin”, she sings in one particularly great bit of enjambment. There and throughout, Carly’s delivery is irresistible: her growth as a vocalist post-Emotion has been fascinating to track through her feature work, and “Party for One” sounds like the payoff. She’s developed from one of my favorite writers to one of my favorite vocalists as well, warm and fantastically emotive. I have no idea how she fits into the current pop landscape - and the answer may be that she doesn’t - but man am I glad we’ve got her here.

MG:

I’m not as pressed by the shitty, scattershot promo – maybe she’s a proxy for Ariana Grande? – since I’ve checked out on, like, mainstream culture but I can say for sure that it never would’ve mattered to me. “Party For One” was one of a scant handful of songs I listened to as close to immediately after their release as I could. Try as she (the royal she, here) might to obscure any success or broad resonance, she’s achieved those things because she works on such an intimate level. She is the party for one and you are that one. Each and every one of us who listened to that song first thing in the morning or last thing before bed is the one. That’s what the music video is about, too. We are never alone, only by ourselves. I think in focusing with so much scrutiny on why Carly Rae Jepsen is not Taylor Swift despite being an artist Swift clearly looks to for inspiration (or, melodies) we miss the fact that Jepsen is managing something so much more unique. She is a pop star who thrives without attention. Everything she does is capable of saturating (and that’s why it sometimes does saturate) but without ever possessing any trying. I think the thing behind the curtain that we’re not supposed to see is that Jepsen really is making idiosyncratic pop music that only she can divine. There’s no conflict between her marketing and her work.

Brigitte Boisselier - Clonaid

Clonaid Spokesperson Brigitte Boisselier – Breathless proclamation was met with equally breathless doubt.

https://pastdaily.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/News-December-27-2002.mp3

December 27, 2002 – BBC Radio 4 News – BBC World Service World Today – Gordon Skene Sound Collection –
December 27, 2002 – shifting focus to what was going on in the rest of the world via the BBC World Service, this day after/day after Christmas 2002. Topping the news was the breathless disclosure that the first human baby was cloned on Christmas Day. Brigitte Boisselier, spokesperson for Clonaid, a Religious UFO organization seeking to be the first scientific group to clone a human, addressed the accomplishment at a press conference and was immediately tossed into doubt by scientists and the press alike. Clonaid was a Canadian-based human cloning organization, registered as a company in the Bahamas Founded in 1997, it has philosophical ties with the UFO religion Raëlism, which sees cloning as the first step in achieving immortality. On December 27, 2002, Clonaid’s chief executive, Brigitte Boisselier, claimed that a baby clone, named Eve, was born. Media coverage of the claim sparked serious criticism and ethical debate that lasted more than a year. Florida attorney Bernard Siegel tried to appoint a special guardian for Eve and threatened to sue Clonaid, because he was afraid that the child might be treated like a lab rat. Siegel, who heard the company’s actual name was not Clonaid, decided that the Clonaid project was a sham. Bioethicist Clara Alto condemned Clonaid for premature human experimentation and noted the high incidence of malformations and thousands of fetal deaths in animal cloning.

In other news – General elections were held in the African nation of Kenya on 27 December 2002. The elections saw the end of the long-standing dominance of the Kenya African National Union, which had governed the country since independence in 1963, including 23 years as the only legal party. Mwai Kibaki of the National Rainbow Coalition was elected president, while the National Rainbow Coalition won a majority in the National Assembly.
They were the first truly free general elections held in Kenya since independence in 1964; a number of by-election were held in 1966 before the onset of de facto one-party rule in 1969.

Meanwhile, in the Chechen Capitol of Grozny, three Chechen suicide bombers ran vehicles into the heavily guarded republic’s government headquarters in the regional capital Grozny. Colonel Ilya Shabalkin, spokesman for the joint federal forces in Chechnya, said the bombing was organized by Chechen rebel field commanders Abu al-Walid and Shamil Basayev. Basayev claimed responsibility for the planning and execution of the attack, saying that he personally detonated the bomb by remote control.

Some news reports called the attack an act of terrorism, which with 83 confirmed fatalities, would have been the deadliest terrorist attack in Chechnya. Others described the attackers as militants and rebels and not terrorists.

All that, and so much more for this December 27, 2002 as reported by BBC Radio 4 and The BBC World Service.

Night Shift” by Lucy Dacus

DV:

Not to dismiss the rest of “Night Shift”, which is built from beautifully observed, highly quotable details, but “In five years I hope the songs feel like covers/ Dedicated to new lovers” is the kind of devastatingly powerful kiss-off that most people can only hope to conceive. Dacus knows it, too: the song deforms around that lyric like it’s a black hole, mannered acoustic guitar on one side and a mess of distortion on the other. Can you imagine being the subject of that line? Dacus uses it to turn a quietly mournful song into one that disowns not just her ex but everything about them, to go from internal to scorched earth in a handful of words. With each repetition it sounds like she’s discovering the lyric for the first time while using it to cast the most devastating curse imaginable; the song culminates with an uncanny delivery that feels like levitation. There was nothing else I listened to this year that surprised me as much as my first listen of “Night Shift”, and even without the surprise it still sends a chill down my spine.

MG:

It feels almost marvelous that we can still be cowed by a song about two people, breaking up. Though perhaps I have it backwards and the marvelous part is that Lucy Dacus even made it to the point in her relationship where she could reasonably describe the termination a break-up. Her caution is that she shouldn’t be taken for granted but none of this should be taken for granted. I don’t mean to find some kind of joy in her pain, but also, isn’t that the point of “Night Shift”? It’s why we love break up songs, it feels so good to shove the fork into the socket. “Night Shift” offers new pleasures because no matter how many times you feel hurt, angry, or betrayed at someone else’s hands, it will still be brand new when it happens again. Each little cut and every uneven scar is a surprise. Dacus doesn’t rely on formula but she is a great example of why guitars were good again this year. It doesn’t have to be novel to be new, in fact, sometimes it’s better to be honest than clever.

2018 Wrap-Up: Top Tracks of 2018

$

Unlike my top albums list, counting down 100 of my favorite songs from the past year was not quite as straightforward. Surprise releases from mega-acts like Beyonce & Jay-Z, Drake, Childish Gambino, and others seemed to happen every other week, while big names outside of hip-hop such as Father John Misty, Lykke Li, Lord Huron, and the 1975 peppered my ears with strong efforts as well. House and dance music seemed to occupy more of my time with my recent purchase of a new Traktor Kontrol S2, which you’ll see reflected in the list with appearances by Weiss, Kideko, Loud Luxury, and Crush Club. Even new names in indie pop/rock like Soccer Mommy, Liz Cooper & the Stampede, and Superorganism joined the crowded field. Kacey Musgraves, Soccer Mommy, and Unknown Mortal Orchestra earned the most individual song nods (3 each), while Drake technically garnered 5 places on the list with 2 features. Needless to say, this collection crosses a lot of genres, so hopefully there is something here for everyone, unless you’re a Drake hater :).

Rather than write about the entire top 100, below are some quick hits about the top 5. Give it a read and let me know your favorites (and what I missed) in the comments!

1.Childish Gambino-This is America

Donald had one helluva 2018, but “This Is America” is my favorite moment of the year for Mr. Glover. Only Childish Gambino could include a gospel choir and the jolliest song intro of 2018 in a song about gun violence in the USA. From the half-sung/half rapped flow to the subtle features (everyone from Young Thug to Quavo dropped an ad-lib) and multi-layered video that was dissected for hidden meanings more than a ‘Lost’ episode, “This Is America” was nearly perfect. This is also probably the only song in my top 10 that I would not listen to any of the remixes I saw floating around the internet.

2.Janelle Monae-Make Me Feel

Speaking of big year’s, Janelle Monae had a pretty nice 2018 herself across movies, TV, and music. “Make Me Feel” kicked off the fun as infectious dance anthem that started a new chapter in Monae’s musical career. The bouyant bass and keys bounce with Monae’s multitude of vocal heights for a dance anthem Michael Jackson, James Brown, and others would be proud of. You can’t listen to “Make Me Feel” without thinking of the late great Prince, but its likely the legend co-signed the influenced track as he was cited as being involved with Dirty Computer.

3.Travis Scott-Sicko Mode feat. Drake

It almost seems unfair to include “Sicko Mode” in this list. Its as if Travis Scott and Drake knew they could cook up 3 separate hits, but didn’t separate them because they have smashes to spare. Drake leads off “part one” in about as epic of an introduction that you could ask for with boastful rhymes and a glowing production before a clever “pick and roll” lyric segways to Travis Scott’s more grimey “part two” that manages to also feature Uncle Luke, Swae Lee, and Biggie. “Part three” sees the 2 spitters share the spotlight with a particularly confident flow by Aubrey. If Drake’s “out like a light” phrasing doesn’t get caught in your mind on repeat, you likely have a hearing issue.

4.Drake-Nice For What

Get ready to see a lot of Aubrey on this list. “Nice For What” rose above Drake’s other solo efforts mostly because of my penchant for the production’s nostalgic New Orleans bounce (bravo for sampling Lauryn Hill and Big Freedia on the same song). However, it was also one of the songs that Drake sounded most comfortable rhyming on. Rather than tough talk and glorification of sex, Drake cooked up a female empowerment anthem that will surely get men on the dance floor as well. The song even inspired Scott Vener (on of my favorite Beats1 Radio hosts and music supervisors) to craft a well-done crowd sourced list of songs that you knew were hits from the first note (aptly titled ‘On the 1’).

5.Parquet Courts-Wide Awake

Congrats to Parquet Courts to being the only non-hip-hop/R&B track to squeeze into my top 5! The Danger Mouse-produced indie rock anthem is light on lyrics, but heavy on punk and funk-influence with what has to be the most fun guitar melodies of the year. The message though simple, could easily apply to staying aware of political narratives or even providing extra motivation to get out of bed on a particularly sluggish morning.

SSION (pronounced “shun”) is a multifaceted creative project spearheaded by Cody Critcheloe, consisting of music, videos, art and live performance. It began as a punk band in Kentucky where Critcheloe is from, spent formative years in Kansas City, where it grew into the New York and Los Angeles based project it is today. Working with a rotating list of collaborators, Ssion has been sporadically releasing records for over 10 years while directing music videos for other notable artists. Ssion has also created artwork for Yeah Yeah Yeahs “Fever To Tell” and more recently art direction for Charli XCX’s “Doing It” video. Ssion’s 2012 release “Bent” garnered huge amounts of international attention and was accompanied by critically acclaimed music videos for “My Love Grows in The Dark”, “Earthquake”, “Luvvbazaar”, and “High” – all produced and directed by Critcheloe. Critcheloe currently lives in New York City. – –
